We learn about this coastal city on a guided tour on Day 3, before a traditional Kathakali performance. Days 4-6. Into Kerala’s mountains Today, we travel by rail into the Ghat Mountains to Thekkady. On Day 5, enjoy a boat trip on Periyar Lake and tour aromatic spice fields, before Day 6 brings a tour of the prestigious Lockhart tea plantation. Days 7 & 8. Exploring Madurai Arriving in Madurai today, we watch the remarkable closing ceremony at the Meenakshi Amman Temple, then explore its lavish palaces and temples on a guided tour on Day 8. Days 9-12. Sri Lanka’s wonders Flying to Colombo, we transfer to our beachfront hotel, then head into the jungle on Day 10 to spot Asian elephants on a Jeep safari. On Day 11, we visit Sigiriya’s imposing Lion Rock Fortress, then stop at the Dambulla cave temples enroute to Kandy on Day 12. On arrival, we tour its best sights, including the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Days 13 & 14. The tea train Today begins with a guided walk through the enchanting Udawatta Kele forest reserve, before we try tea-plucking at a Ceylon plantation. A highlight awaits on Day 14, as we ride the ‘tea train’ to Nanu Oya, through the breathtaking scenery of Sri Lanka’s central highlands. Days 15 & 16. Homeward bound Our last full day brings a guided tour of Colombo and a farewell dinner at its Lotus Tower.
